Furniture Store Opens at Fourth and University

We’ve noticed quite a few developments happening around Hillcrest in the last few weeks.

Hillcrest

It’s hard to miss Famaliving, which recently opened at Fourth and University in the former Column One location. We’ve never heard of it, but they apparently have another store in San Marcos and several others around the world. They specialize in custom furniture from Spain, but we’ll probably never see the inside because we’re so turned off by that odd canopy advertisement.

It looks like something is going in at 435 University Avenue, where Cathedral—one of our old favorites—closed last year. We were sad to see that boutique close after 18 years of business in Hillcrest.

At Eighth and University, scaffolding has gone up around Kelly’s Treasures, which closed earlier this year. We hear that this might be turning into a Japanese restaurant.

Mankind is still working on its new location at Richmond and University in the same building as Filter Coffee House. The revolving storefront next door currently features Cheaters & Sun, a reading and sunglasses retailer. On the second level, the former Hillcrest Organics medical marijuana dispensary space appears to be getting divided.

Ugh, is that hideous famaliving canopy even legal?

If it’s not illegal, it ought to be!

No more ugly as the whole building being neglected for over 25 years.

      That Famaliving awning IS hideous!

    1. Column One Building has been that same color as long as I’ve been coming to Hillcrest in 1990. It’s due for some maintenance and paint.

    2. Cathedral store front has been ruined. This streamlined-modern building has the potential of looking fabulous if it too, could have too, can have the love and care it deserves.

    3. 801 University, finally getting the much needed work it needed. Will have to keep a clse watch on this to make sure they stick to the the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Preservation, since this building has been designated as “Historic”.

    4. Ghastly building where Filter is… Was so glad they were giving it a facelift… and then it’s still FUGLY! This building’s destined to always be an eyesore. Did you know that before this building there was a very modern Jack-In-The-Box on this corner?!
